Notes | This brief note describes an August, 2010 observation of common ravens feeding on mole crabs ("sand crabs) at Netarts Spit. What is so remarkable about this event? The accuracy of the ravens was remarkable -- one particular bird was successful with four out of five tries. Also, "exploitation by ravens of sand crabs on the northern Oregon coast is a behavior probably learned during the last 20 years" (p.410), because the mole crabs are relatively recent emigrants to northern Oregon beaches. |
