Notes | After the strong 1997/1998 El Nino, young green crabs appeared in several West Coast estuaries. The question is: would European green crabs maintain viable populations in their new environments once ocean conditions became less favorable to their survival? This paper reports on a study of European green crabs during their first ten years in the Pacific Northwest. Their populations declined as the 1997/1998 El Nino ebbed and less favorable conditions resumed. The downward trend was reversed in 2005 and 2006, however, and it now seems likely that mild winters and continued favorable recruitment could lead to their spread to northern British Columbia and Alaska.
