AbstractMonthly changes in biomass, growth form and primary production of a Z. marina bed were monitored along transects at three tidal heights. Morphological features measured included: leaf area and numbers, epiphyte load, and seedling, vegetative turion and reproductive turion density. Biomass was measured for the benthic microflora, Zostera , epiphytes and associated litter. Zostera leaf production and export were measured by a modified Zieman technique. Primary production of Zostera and epiphytes was measured by the super(14)C method. Zostera biomass was maximum along all transects in July. Values ranged from 133 g dry weight per m super(2) (high intertidal) to 463 g dry weight per m super(2) (low intertidal). Primary production, as measured by the Zieman method, was maximum along all transects during the preceding month.
